We’ll land in Singapore, and the first thing you’ll think is that you’ve arrived in the wrong century. Skyscrapers that seem to float, gardens that look as though they were designed by a computer, and a city that has decided nature and technology don’t have to compete. And yet, just around the corner, a centuries-old temple still smells of incense, just as it did long before a single glass tower rose around it.
From there, we’ll head to Kuala Lumpur, and the change of scenery will be dramatic. You’ll walk streets that still carry the legacy of the Malay sultanates that ruled these lands for centuries, their influence visible in every palace, every mosque, and every cave transformed into a place of worship. Then, just a couple of kilometres away, two steel towers rising more than 400 metres into the sky remind you that this is also home to one of Southeast Asia’s most futuristic skylines.
And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you’ll arrive in Hong Kong. A city that never sleeps, never slows down, never lets your attention wander. Wooden boats that have sailed these waters for generations still cross paths each evening with the ferries serving one of the busiest harbours on Earth. You’ll climb to the top of a mountain and look down on a city where humanity has stacked neighbourhood upon neighbourhood, leaving hardly a single inch of space unused.
Macao will bring the journey to a close, and by then the contrast will no longer be just architectural, but cultural. Cobblestone streets, stone churches, and unmistakably European squares suddenly give way to a centuries-old Taoist temple. Portugal and China sharing the same few city blocks, as though it had never been unusual.
